It's a different winning ugly. Gilbert's specialty was to make the other player play bad. Coco does not do that. She does not bring the other player's game down.

I saw a lot of this match. Mirra was out of control and had one meltdown where she repeatedly banged her thigh with her fist in frustration.

She fell in the second set and got a NFL worthy wrap on her left foot but Kessler held her nerve and won.

I wonder if this could be the issue?
Something to keep an eye on for the NA hardcourt season: At the USO last year, 1st serve%s dipped (down to 57%) and double fault rates skyrocketed (close to Medvedev's seasonal average) due to the hard-to-control balls being used. This trend appears to be repeating itself in Canada so far.
Discussion
If you look at the completed ATP matches so far there are a ton of sub-60% 1st serve rates

Iga Swiatek in her interview on Roddick's podcast also said that the balls seem much lighter to her when practicing with them and that they're much harder to control

This also has rallying implications as well because the Cincy/USO balls last year tended to not take spin very well at all which was part of the reason certain high ranked players had massive issues keeping it in play

At first it might seem like grasping at straws but there have been some pretty clear massive swings in results among even high ranked players with different ball conditions and Iga outright said it herself

Teenager Victoria Mboko of Canada defeated Marie Bouzkova 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

A slow start from Mboko but then she put on a show in front of the home crowd. Mboko is into the 4th round on her debut and will play top seed Gauff next

Aaaah... grow up? :?
She is still only 21. She will mature in front of our eyes. She is simply doing that.
Andreeva will too.
We keep forgetting. These are kids. Barely able to go buy beer in the USA. In Andreeva's case, get a driver's license.

What is up with Pegula? Not doing well this year ..did win a couple of lesser tournaments but really poor performance in majors xnd bigger tournaments. Montreal is a bit slow, but she won this 2 years ago. I am no Pegula fan, but even I am surprised..she should do better at Cincy, though, where the court is faster, quite a bit faster ..anyone have any theories about her insipid form?

ashkor87 wrote: Mon Jul 28, 2025 7:25 am this court is rated significantly slower than average.. look for Anisimova, Swiatek, even Rybakina to do well here..Rybakina and Anisimova needa little more time to hit their shots, and neither is the quickest mover out there.. Swiatek is.. Swiatek... not clear how Coco will do, didnt do all that well at IW, where the court was slow, but did do well at RG, so who knows.. her game is adaptable enough..though I still think she will do better at Cinci than here, because the court there is significantly faster.
So far so good..all as expected/predicted

Great win for Muchova over Bencic but she is still unable to crush that double-hander...her arm must be injured still...

Her wrist seems permanently hampered, and she still manages to play the way she does when she can take the court.
