Many players are foraying to the net and it is working for them - even Kostyuk, whom I dont see normally as a volleyer, did it very effectively.. the court isnt lightning fast, so you have to do something to put the ball away, it is not easy to hit a winner. Muchova and Leylah will do well here.
as with many hard courts, those top spun second serves arent working too well.. they just sit up and beg to be hit..most players are good at that these days.. I think slice would work better .. wish someone would try it..

As for Pegula, she is of course a great volleyer so was using it well, and she was hitting very deep - most of her shots were landing within a foot of the line.. would be good for her to keep that up..

Yes, but I'd like to see what kind of crazy results would have to happen for her to NOT qualify without it. How do they even calculate that?

I stopped keeping track of her retirements. By now, it is accepted. Her body can't deal with this sport for more than a couple of weeks.

I was thinking about her for biggest Loser, then was worried she may just wind up WD'ing before tournament starts.

I never consider her for anything. She is that much of a gamble.
