Why? He did not play those tournaments? The trophies were given to him without him actually playing the matches?
At the time, these were a hopscotch of tours and tournaments. He went and played, because that was the structure of the day. So, claiming that some of his titles are "meaningless" is a disservice. One of the great things that Connors did was to play a lot and everywhere, around the USA. He brought the sport out of the country club. He was a great ambassador to the sport, even with his confrontational personality (he was a boor, admittedly)
To take away as many as 25 titles from his achievements would be kind of insulting.
Agree that Djokovic should play more MS1000's. But, without the day's rest in between matches, his chances of winning one are slim. He is finally slowing down.

They were called invitationals just for the marketing. They gave points.
The PGA still uses that trick. The Arnold Palmer Invitational actually keeps it to make it sound more exclusive. "Hey, you not only need to be a PGA pro, you need to be invited to this exclusive tournament".
C'mon, you and I are old enough to remember that ;)

I am old enough to remember that, when he was at his peak, he declined to play anywhere except 'challenge' matches against the likes of Laver and Newcombe. he thought he was too good for normal tournaments. His hubris was punished when Borg came along..that is not what you can call 'good for the game'
He was my contemporary at UCLA so I know his story well. He ws the kind of player who gave Americans a bad name around the world. 'Ugly American'

Absolutely.
And he made the sport very popular. He was the guy that took the "country club" label off the sport, made it more accesible.
Everything you say? On the spot. Connors behaved on court like a bully on many occasions. Did he help the sport grow? Sure. Was he a boor? That too.
Then he was joined by Nastase and Mac and we know about those ugly days.

I was there for 3 weeks during the fall, and it was high 90's in temperature with a steady mist-to-rain falling the entire time.

Agreed Connor was a grade A ass, but if we were subtracting titles for that quality, Djokovic would also lose a large number of titles. :D
