she is from Ahmedabad, where we lived for many years, my son used to play with her brother, she was just a kid running around picking balls for them.. now she trains in Pune, where I live, and I go to see her matches wherever possible.. she is now India's #1 player (not doing so well at the global level) but still, India's #1.. struggles for funds, naturally, since she is from a typical middle-class family ..

Being #1 in a country of 1.4 billion is no small feat. Too bad to hear about the lack of funding, though. India has a very strong tradition of tennis, so I find that to be surprising.
Hope she can get over that difficulty.
