by ashkor87 a lot of boring, inconsequential matches, except for Osaka-Muchova, which I will try to watch at least one set of..

by Suliso Ruud vs Mensik maybe? But indeed not many amazing matches on paper unless someone surprises us by beating a high seed.

by jazzyg Siegemund takes the first-set tiebreak from Zheng, so that one might get interesting.

by JTContinental Laura Siegemund has succeeded in annoying last year's runner up out of the tournament.

by jazzyg Siegemund played an outstanding match against Gauff in the first round of the U.S. Open two years ago and could have taken her out, but she didn't and Gauff went on to win the tournament.

Siegemund always takes herself seriously even when her ranking indicates she shouldn't.

by JTContinental Tomas Machac seems to have forgotten to wear shorts on court.

by jazzyg Andreeva just won the final four points of the third-set tiebreak to beat Uchijima 10-8.

Andreeva is in no way a contender for the title as others have projected, but that was a nice comeback because it looked like she was going down.

by Owendonovan I want both Muchova and Osaka to win equally, so this is a kind of torture match. I just can't find a way to get into these kind of matches, though I continue to try.

by ashkor87 that was an impressive win by Osaka - the old grand slam champion mode seemed to come back in the last 2 sets. So much for people saying she is all washed up...

by ashkor87 The value of playing doubles ..Siegemund really showed that today ..volleys, touch, angled returns ..

by ashkor87 Ruud's topspun forehand really not effective on hard courts..sits up and begs to be hit.

by Suliso Mensik is also on his way up.

and it was.

by jazzyg I was one of the people who thought Osaka might be washed up.

Very impressive performance in the last two sets. Outstanding.

It seemed like they got shorter every set

by jazzyg The ATP website had a good note on Fonseca and Mensik. This is the first time two teenagers have beaten top-10 players at a slam since Djokovic and Murray did it at Wimbledon in 2006.

by mick1303 Umpires shall call hindrance and replay the point when something like heckling in 1st set tiebreak of Draper-Kokkinakis happens. These yahoos shall know that when they try to mess with the opponent of the home player, there will be consequences.

She’s still got it…and believes. Been listening to her interviews. She said she is serving smarter these days.

She is tough and smart. Great gut-check win for the 17-year-old.

She can be a super tough player. I knew that US Open match would be an upset alert. Gauff was on that hot streak and predicted to win the tournament, and I was like, not so fast, that first-rounder is going to be a dogfight. There’s a really good interview with Siegemund on The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast from last year. It made me see her a new light.

by JTContinental On the opposite end of the spectrum, she's my least favorite player on the tour. :gorgeous:

New rule:
Players playing at home get called for hindrance if a person outside the court heckles the opponent.

Opponent:
How much is it going to cost me to hire 5 guys to heckle me when I am down?

I see your point, but enforcing that would be a nightmare.

Shall be at umpire's discretion, of course. But umpires shall have this rule in their disposal. Something more potent, than just repeating "please, please". These crowds may affect the results of the match. Obviously the rule shall not separate home and away players formally. It could be the heckling in favor of the crowd favorite even when he is not a home player. But if outside interference affects the result, there shall be means to counter it.

by mick1303 Another way could be to have all the area close to the courts covered by security cameras and security having the authority to escort the perpetrators out of the court. This may exist already, but not enforced. In this case umpire will not call the hindrance but shall have the authority to stop the play until the hecklers will be escorted out.
