But he's only a little over a hundred points out of a seeded position for the Australian Open, and he's not shutting down his season, he's just not going to Shanghai. There's 3 weeks of European indoor tournaments that they're focusing on.

by ashkor87 I really think Djokovic should play more 1000 level tournaments instead of trying for his 25th major, which he is not going to get anyway, with Sincaraz in the way.. but he can catch Federer in total number of titles won - as I have remarked earlier, Connors' record isnt real, it should be more like 85 or 90, not 109.

Connors' record isnt real, it should be more like 85 or 90, not 109.
Why? He did not play those tournaments? The trophies were given to him without him actually playing the matches?
At the time, these were a hopscotch of tours and tournaments. He went and played, because that was the structure of the day. So, claiming that some of his titles are "meaningless" is a disservice. One of the great things that Connors did was to play a lot and everywhere, around the USA. He brought the sport out of the country club. He was a great ambassador to the sport, even with his confrontational personality (he was a boor, admittedly)
To take away as many as 25 titles from his achievements would be kind of insulting.
Agree that Djokovic should play more MS1000's. But, without the day's rest in between matches, his chances of winning one are slim. He is finally slowing down.

many of them were invitationals, not open tournaments.. in todays world, they wouldnt be called tournaments at all.
by
ponchi101 They were called invitationals just for the marketing. They gave points.
The PGA still uses that trick. The Arnold Palmer Invitational actually keeps it to make it sound more exclusive. "Hey, you not only need to be a PGA pro, you need to be invited to this exclusive tournament".
C'mon, you and I are old enough to remember that

He was a great ambassador to the sport
I am old enough to remember that, when he was at his peak, he declined to play anywhere except 'challenge' matches against the likes of Laver and Newcombe. he thought he was too good for normal tournaments. His hubris was punished when Borg came along..that is not what you can call 'good for the game'
He was my contemporary at UCLA so I know his story well. He ws the kind of player who gave Americans a bad name around the world. 'Ugly American'
by ponchi101 Absolutely.
And he made the sport very popular. He was the guy that took the "country club" label off the sport, made it more accesible.
Everything you say? On the spot. Connors behaved on court like a bully on many occasions. Did he help the sport grow? Sure. Was he a boor? That too.
Then he was joined by Nastase and Mac and we know about those ugly days.

I was there for 3 weeks during the fall, and it was high 90's in temperature with a steady mist-to-rain falling the entire time.

Agreed Connor was a grade A ass, but if we were subtracting titles for that quality, Djokovic would also lose a large number of titles.

Arthur Rinderknech after beating Alexander Zverev in Shanghai Masters: "It's tough for everyone. 50% of the matches are not finishing, and 50% of the matches are finishing with the guys cramping or vomiting. We're using an incredible amount of shirts, and thankfully, the laundry is working well."

that is not the reason.. the reason is they were not all tournaments the way we understand it today.

no, the current system of 'official' tournaments hadnt yet taken hold.
by ponchi101 Ah, ok. So let's take tournaments away from Connors because he was not able to play in the system that is used today.
Totally his fault.
by ponchi101 Time to stop having players playing on a cement slab at noon. It is way too hot.
Start play at 4. And play a bit more into the night.
Even F1 is running races at night.
by ponchi101 Great. But where was Giovanni going? He was covering the volley where?

by Suliso And still all semi finalists are Europeans...
by ponchi101 Americans have many more options to make money as an athlete. The minimum salary for an NBA player is above $1MM. That is for a player that has not experience in the NBA.
Young athletes in the USA have no reason to go for tennis, financially.
by Suliso If that was the only criteria nobody would choose skiing or track and field. Clearly not the case.
by ponchi101 Some people do.
But for skiing, that is a very expensive sport. Not a lot of people can afford it. I would believe that it is more affordable in Europe, and therefore most skiing stars are European. Michaella Shiffrin is an exception, not the rule.
Track and field is of course cheap (relatively). So the USA has a great pool of athletes there. And they are making money.

And now they are playing the final.
by ponchi101 I am truly surprised for the score in the Djokovic match. Although it seems he was injured.
That body can't heal as quickly as before
And a little bit of a data point that, if you take J/C out of the equation, the parity in the ATP is also pretty good. Although I say that a healthy Novak is still #3 in the world.

by ponchi101 Let's see if Vacherot has arrived, or if he is the Roberto Carretero of this decade.
That was a well played match.
