by ponchi101 Kenin takes out Garcia. Caro has totally returned to her level, after that annus miraculous (winning the WTF).

by mick1303 Ben Rothenberg is full of s**t. First, if Elena is calm and collected, it does not mean that she has to be extra nice to everybody. Especially to the media. They frequently behave like vultures, looking for a controversy. Since Elena does not generate controversy - they dismiss her as not interesting enough. The problem with that is that they did not perform their duties with a proper professionalism. These questions are primitive and it is easy to see why she was grumpy with them. It is possible to be a tennis writer/media person and generate interest basing on the game analyses (see Gill Gross at example). Apparently Rothenberg and his ilk are just not capable of this. They either not knowledgeable enough or not articulate enough. To put it simply - they are just not good at what they suppose to do. And when Rybakina puts them to task, they are getting defensive and try to put the blame on her. They think it is her duty to be creative and interesting at the pressers - THEY ARE WRONG. It is THEIR duty to make pressers more interesting.

I like your post, but: what triggered it? I have not seen any news about Elena or an interview that went wrong.
Elaborate, if you wish.

by mick1303 There is plenty of reaction on Youtube to Elena's presser. I watched it myself after I saw some videos where observers were criticizing her. She was edgy because it seems that she got fed up with the same questions. But I do not consider her rude in this instance as many suggested.

Interview didn't "went wrong" per se. She was smiling and all. But she made some remarks about the questions being "the same all the time". And this triggered media people.

I watched the presser, listened to the Tennis Podcast opinions, saw Ben's tweet, etc... I have to say, Elena was out of line. It was a bratty and rude press conference. Her comments weren't lighthearted, they were mocking. I'm sure she's uncomfortable, but they were EASY questions and completely relevant. Suck it up and answer them like the professional you are. Yes, they're simple questions. Journalists get one question. They probably have to write about the match; some are working on non-match-related features, but most are news reporters writing about the match. They aren't at a player's practices every day and privy to the inner workings of their preparation and mindset. If they were, they'd have richer questions. Give them a break.

Tennis Podcast mentioned that Casper Ruud has been asked multiple times why he played Geneva before a Slam. He gave a thoughtful answer each time - because they were different journalists. No one can attend every presser and read every transcript. It's part of the job to answer questions over and over. An EASY part of the job.

This doesn't even broach the subject of journalists trying to extract some personality from her, which might benefit her. A topic for another day. Much more nuanced. In the meantime, every player should answer decent questions as best they can. She can keep it short. She can even take a pass. But she shouldn't eye-roll and make fun of the journalists, who are just doing their job. Pretty well, I might add.

I wouldn't be surprised if she apologizes at her next presser.

by meganfernandez Kenin! Anyone see it? Did she play well or did Garcia stink?

by Fastbackss Well Swiatek - Osaka has been quite the match. Naomi down a break in the first. Got it back, had a set point, didn't capitalize. Crushed in tiebreak.
Now up 2 breaks in 2nd - halfway towards evening the match

by Suliso Wow, Swiatek about to lose to Osaka on clay! That's a shocking outcome if you ask me.

by ponchi101 You just jinxed her but I would say that it is a case of a very good player making another good player earn it. What was the score in the 3rd that made you say she was about to lose? I am working and can only see the live scores.
But a good sigh for others. She can be beat. If you hit big.

by Suliso When I wrote it Iga was a break point down serving at 1-4 in the third. Not sure about a good sign for others, very few can hit like Osaka.

by ponchi101 Ok, I just saw that. Up 5-2, serving for the match at 5-3 and holding a MP.
She is Naomi Osaka. Her credentials are sterling. But, can we say she choked?

Aryna, Elena, Ostapenko. Who else can wail the ball?

by Suliso That's a very short list, isn't it? For some reason she has a lot of trouble with Elena, much less with Aryna. Ostapenko even more so, but that would be SF's in this case. I'd be super surprised if she gets that far.

by Fastbackss Been a while since a suliso jinx of that proportion

(That should be its own thread, btw)

Sure. Agree. I was really asking. Who can hit her off the court, on clay? Positioning tennis won't do, as she is fast enough to get to almost everything.
PAVS, at her very best?

I'm not sure, I didn't see the match point. Did she make a terrible unforced error, or just miss a little, or did Iga just play better on that point? I think Naomi just hasn't been in that position lately, and she was playing the best of the best. Not a bad loss, even with MP. She'll take away the positives.

I wonder what the odds were, for betting, for Naomi to win. This would have been the biggest upset of the year. Bigger than Nardi beating Djokovic, even though Naomi has Slams.

by skatingfan I can't remember a French Open with this many consecutive rainy days to open the tournament.

by Suliso It's a rainy and cold start of the summer here in West-Central Europe. The North and the East is baking, though. Today it was far hotter in North Finland than in Switzerland. That surely doesn't happen very often...

2016! I was there and had tickets for one of the few dry days of the first week.

Global Warming, world-wide.

For the past few years, Chicago has had MUCH more mild weather with our winters. Which for me is extremely pleasant- as long as I forget about the world ending.

It's the same in NYC. We now have a rainy season instead of a winter season.

,,,,OK, wait just a second here. You think.....YOU'RE the dummy?!?!?!?!

I mean, was it YOU?!?!?!?! who watched almost all of that third set....until, after numerous death-defying break point saves, Osaka got broken at 5-all in the third set. After having one match point, and a kazillion times being within 2 points of winning. Which, at that point, rather than watch the last game, I threw all of our 3 TV's in Lake Michigan. (AND we live on the 16th floor. So, I was mildly perturbed). :gorgeous:

by skatingfan I found Nelsus' apartment.

by Suliso I read somewhere that Basel climate now is what Tuscany used to be in late 19th century. On a purely personal level I like it too.

I was in team Iga in that match so lucky me...

by mick1303 Not that I dislike Iga or anything. But Osaka win would've injected an intrigue in the women's draw. It would've become 10-times more interesting.

by Suliso I don't agree. She would have just messed up the draw and lost herself one or two rounds later. On hard courts perhaps a different story.

by ponchi101 On Mick's side. She will now romp to the final, losing a total of 9 games.

by Suliso Swiatek vs Sabalenka final will be great

by ponchi101 Elena-Aryna has a better ring to me :)

by Suliso But that's impossible this year ;)

by jazzyg Osaka definitely choked that match away. She had about 5 routine errors on pivotal points after going up 5-2 that she had not made all match, and most of them were not aggressive errors. They were just bad misses because she could not handle the moment.

Totally understandable. She still is trying to work her way back and did not have a win on clay anything like this even before her mental health issues and having a child.

I was on team Iga, too. Always found something disingenuous about Osaka, but she is one of the cleanest ball strikers ever. Let's see if she uses this as a positive or can't get past blowing what would have been a remarkable win.
