by ashkor87 Osaka Ostapenkois the one I want to see today! high star power match.

potential upsets; about 50% probability; Schmiedlova over Tauson (would it even be an upset?), Avanesyan over Haddad Maia (court may be too fast for BHM), Sasnovich over Boulter (Sasnovich is very good player, can beat anyone.. beat Serena once if I am not mistaken).. Andreeva versus Osorio is unfortunate, both young players we would want to see more of..

by mick1303 Mensik starts to justify the advances issued to him.

by jazzyg Collins out in the first round to Dolehide.

Was surprised to see analysts picking Collins as a contender. If the U.S. Open had been played in May, maybe, but she has really struggled since her white-hot streak earlier this year and came in less than 100 percent physically.

by JTContinental Swiatek looked very ordinary today. I don't see her winning this tournament, or even being the finalist from this half.

by JTContinental In other world #1 news, Sinner is down a set and a break to Mackie McDonald.

Agree with you. Sad as it's her last major.

I didn't see it ; did she look tight?

by ponchi101 Not tight. But she did not look comfy.

by ponchi101 Is Stefanos done? That was a bad loss. I know Kokkinakis is a fighter, but that would have been a routine victory a few years ago.

....AT which point, McDonald had a few game points to go up 2-0 in the second.....and, then, inevitably, the double faults and errors cost that game. AND since then.....

I'll let you start up the Tsitsipas is Washed Up thread.

Albeit, perhaps a Tsitsipas and Rune are Washed Up thread would be more appropriate. :gorgeous: :gorgeous:

Look- in any year, I would not have been shocked if Kokkinakis wins a set or two. He is talented.

Nevertheless.....I still think Tsitsipas (AND, for that matter, Rune, of course) can still find his best team and get his s**t together. But, it does indeed look not so likely. Especially with Alcaraz and Sinner being around for the next bunch of years. (He Who Shall Not Be Named is still, obviously, a huge factor. But....not for much longer.....right....) :freaking:

by nelslus The EVER reliable Rybakina had to “save” a few set points in that second set, serving at 5-6. She managed to wobble her way through.

by jazzyg The Tsitsipas backhand has been exposed as a massive weakness except on clay. I believe he is done as even a fringe contender on faster surfaces, and we wiil see if he can remain a factor on the dirt.

by ti-amie Fils will win his match vs the 18 year old Learner Tien out of California but the kid's attitude the entire match has been "you're going to have to beat me".

by ti-amie I saw almost all of Collins match except the end. I thought she would win. She did look uncomfortable out there today.

Andreescu vs Paolini is my night match.

That is the reason I say he might be washed. A one hander is very hard on your back. And his injury is precisely that kind. So, unless he can take care of that injury, that BH liability you talk about will not go away.

Yes, I think so, unless he makes some big changes in his life, starting with dumping his dad as coach and laying off the social media. Then he can work on his backhand.

I think he's going to be the best American male player we've had since Andy Roddick.

by ponchi101 Evans and Khachanov just played the longest match in USO history.
A truly gutsy performance by Evans. Down 0-4 in the 5th, he won 6 games in a row.

Let's not "Gasquet" him. He's not that tall at 1.8m (5'9") and he's still babyfaced.
That said you're echoing what a lot of people are saying. That's why I watched the match. :)

by ti-amie Meanwhile Leylah-Annie just lost a match she could've won against Potapova. She just faded at the end.

ti-amie wrote: Tue Aug 27, 2024 11:05 pm Meanwhile Leylah-Annie just lost a match she could've won against Potapova. She just faded at the end.
Leylah had SO many break points in that third set. She just tends to get passive in winning positions- while, at times, wildly over-playing shots.

by skatingfan Just one time I would like her to step back on 2nd serve so that the server has to think about where to hit the serve.

by jazzyg I am thinking Fernandez has a zero percent chance to win the tournament now.

Which is exactly the same chance she had before she lost today.

by ponchi101 She will always have that RU plate.
We said it a long time ago. She does not have the physical power. She is a 4 cylinder engine in a land of V8's.

LOL, she also made the QF of the French Open in 2022.....AND, she has all of those great doubles results....

by Fastbackss Last night two ESPN channels but not worthy of two stations (see my comments on the Sloane match).

Tonight only one channel and they are sticking with the Alcaraz thumping when Andreescu/paolini match could be on.

(Yes I could buy ESPN+ I am aware but I don't have it so I would rather whine)

The Alcaraz thumping has... turned around. A very high class 2nd set.

by ponchi101 He won't win. But Tu has a lovely BH slice. It bites that court and stays very low.
Carlitos workout just became a bit more aerobic.

by ashkor87 Shocking loss by Collins.Watching Andreescu leading Paolini..but she is tiring...very high quality match .

I brought that on myself. No chance now of watching either woman's match in the 3rd set

by jazzyg If you had DirecTV, you would get five free channels with nothing but tennis during the day session. Watching Raducanu v. Kenin now.

by atlpam Paolini/Andreescu was a first round worthy of being a final.

by jazzyg Three of the four women who played in finals on Saturday lost in the first round here, continuing a long-time trend in slams. Only Haddad-Maia survived the curse, rallying to win in three sets.

Kessler got crushed by Kostyuk. Sun retired after losing the first set to Bronzetti. Noskova lost in straights to Putintseva.

Sofia Kenin after beating Emma Raducanu at the US Open

“Your support means so much to me. Thank you for keeping me going.. it was a rollercoaster. Emma is such a tough player. She played some great tennis. I’m just happy to have won. It was super close. The third set could’ve gone either way. I tried to handle my nerves. The support from you guys and everyone in the box means a lot.”

“I try to take one match at a time. Emma won this a few years ago. I feel like it was a great blockbuster first round match. I’m happy to have gone through. We’ll see what happens.”

by Owendonovan Raducanu and Fernandez out in the 1st. Didn't pick em then, didn't pick em now.
