Ah, ok. So let's take tournaments away from Connors because he was not able to play in the system that is used today.

Time to stop having players playing on a cement slab at noon. It is way too hot.
Start play at 4. And play a bit more into the night.
Even F1 is running races at night.

Americans have many more options to make money as an athlete. The minimum salary for an NBA player is above $1MM. That is for a player that has not experience in the NBA.
Young athletes in the USA have no reason to go for tennis, financially.
