by meganfernandez Rybakina let Paolini win 15/16 points on serve in the first set, including 8/8 second serves. Pathetic. She was returning both serves from way back.

The press will have something interesting to ask now.

by Suliso So much for the inevitable Sabalenka vs Rybakina match...

by ponchi101 Paolini takes it.
That is a shocker, to me. I guess it will be Aryna and Iga in the final.
Go Coco!!! 🤞

by nelslus I had been referring to Kvitova as Venus Lite. NOW, we have Elena Rybakina as Petra Lite. Make Rybakina and Kvitova have to try to think for a minute or two during a match, and.....

LOL, I especially hate rooting for players these days. Cannot WAIT for tomorrow's men's SF results. Not to mention the thought of Screamingly Dull Iga and The Anti-Christ winning the singles titles. :bang:

by Suliso It's funny how differently we see players sometimes. To me Swiatek is far more exciting than Rybakina both on and off court.

Same. Iga is so intense and she produces astounding tennis. I love watching her compete. I like Rybakina's clean power but am not drawn to watch her play.

by ponchi101 I can't recall anybody with uglier strokes than Iga (WTA side; Daniil has her beat in that department). She makes Seles looks stylish and polished.
So, indeed, how differently we see players :)
And, yes. ElenaRybakina = PetraKvitova 2.0.

by ponchi101 BTW. First real "upset" of the tournament. Everything else had gone pretty much according to seeding.

by Suliso Rybakina off court is kind of a "dead fish". There is seemingly no spark of life at all in her...

If she has a personality, she hasn't shown an ounce of it.

by ponchi101 If you look at the stats, Andreeva is ahead in almost all categories. By a little bit.
So much for my recent assessment that she had not made that push forward. Conchita seems to be working well.

For sure. But Sabalenka is sick.

by ponchi101 Aaaaah. Can't see that in the stats and the live score. What is wrong with her?

They can still play it. They will be free tomorrow.
What an odd day. And now, it truly looks like it is Iga's crown, even if she falls off the bed on Saturday.

by JTContinental Wow the bottom of the draw collapsed quickly

by Suliso The most surprising day late in a Slam in a long time.

Like Rybakinaitis- appeared to be quite under the weather. Twice medical staff came out to provide some kind of medications for her. She hacked at times, bent over, appeared to me at times to just give up during a few points.....The match was fascinating in an ugly but entertaining way. Mirra should have won this in straight sets- she served for the first set. Missed opportunities from both of them. But, a well earned victory.

AND, btw. Little Fat Face now has the opportunity to win the women's singles and doubles.....As does Coco.

Now, please enjoy the rest of our Iga Invitational. :vomit:

....Well, there was also the Emma/Leylah US Open final......

by Suliso True, but I've forgotten whom exactly they beat in SF's...

by nelslus In the 2021 US Open SF's, Emma beat Sakkari 1&4, and Leylah beat- appropriately enough- Sabalenka 6-4 in the third.

Besides that, you had not initially mentioned anything about the SF's. Your post stated, The most surprising day late in a Slam in a long time.

Thus- CASE closed.

I really have to use like A LOT OF EMOJIS when I write stuff you will read.
;) ;) ;)
I am NOT a carlos-phobe. Love his style, and he is great for the sport. I don't remember what was it that I said about him but, the fact that I said something bad about him does not make me a phobe.
Listen: I LOVED HENIN. But I would be the first one to admit and deplore her 12 years of constant conversation with Carlos while playing. I criticize the players I like, if they do something I don't approve of.
And I really liked Monica. But to say there strokes were elegant and polished would be... inaccurate?
(She hit balls like a hungry rottweiler eats a hamburger).

by Suliso I'm firmly on a bus Sinner in the new rivalry at the top. Anyone else?

Suliso wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:58 pm I'm firmly on a bus Sinner in the new rivalry at the top. Anyone else?
I think it worth a poll. Not who each thinks more likely to win but who each WANTS to win between them

by Suliso Agree, but I think we need ponchi for that. :)

by ponchi101 I still don't understand how come you guys can't create polls. When you start a topic, the poll creation option is at the bottom.
But sure. Will do so. How about after RG? And how to create the poll?
Who will be the top 2 or 3 players at the top rivalry?
And list the names, allowing for multiple choices.
(I am not sure if Rune will be there, as high as people were on him a couple of years ago).

by Suliso Prediction of future is hard, but I think it will be only Alcaraz and Sinner at the very top. They won't win all Slams, but 3/4 for the next 2 years is not a crazy idea I think.

After RG is fine. Also in this particular case the question I posed is "whom do you like better" not "who is better and will won more".

by JTContinental First time ever an Italian man and woman have been in a Grand Slam semi at the same time

by Suliso Chances of both reaching the final are not great, but significantly above zero.

Suliso wrote: Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:58 pm I'm firmly on a bus Sinner in the new rivalry at the top. Anyone else?
Yeah, Sinner 100% but probably Rune, actually. My favorite think about Jannik is his name. He's a little bland for me otherwise, but I like him better than Carlos. I never drank the Carlos Kool-Aid. I don't have anything against him, but the gushing over his drop shot got on my nerves. I Hear people saying how he brings so much variety to tennis, and it's really one fundamental shot - an under-used shot that he has mastered, yes, but it's nothing new. And everyone acts like he transformed the game. So that put me off.

by mick1303 I like many things about Carlos. But somehow I like Sinner more. I will root for him in this semi.

by ti-amie Wow y'all are on a tear today!

I'd rather watch Carlos play than Sinner. I'd rather watch Iga play than Rybakina.

I'm happy that the player I've been following for a couple of years now and never thought would make a deep run in a major let alone make the semi's has. Little Jasmine as I call her has had a great tournament no matter what happens.

I watched Mirra Andreeva play for the first time today and have to say that whether Sabalenka was having menstrual issues or not Andreeva played the hand she was dealt and played it well. Conchita was literally beaming in the stands.

Andreeva is a serious talent and well-coached. I hope she doesn’t flame out. She played really well but clearly Aryna was compromised. Aryna fought very hard.

I, and others, have written enough about alternate views on Carlos' game- his great forehand, very strong backhand, willingness to come to the net, great approach shots with, at least, good enough volleys, his improv skills, excellent both on offense and defense, his athleticism, his speed....as you have stuck with this same very narrow view of Carlos' game. The. Drop. Shot. I mean, for example- I could not stand Henin, but I would never try to discredit her game and her skills. I truly will never understand this Drop Shop Negativity Business. I apparently have missed out on all of the massive hordes of tennis fans gushing and drooling over his drop shots. (BTW, for a long time, Roger had strong disrespect for drop shots, until he figured out that, hey, drops shots can be a great way to win more matches).

And, yes, come on, you do have something against Carlos- at least, certainly, his game. As we all have players and games we don't like. I mean...you never drank the Carlos Kool-Aid....

I also will yet again point out- he is 21 freakin' years old. Who knows what his game will look like in the coming years. So, yet again, I strongly disagree.

by nelslus PS: To the shock of everyone- I am strongly rooting for Carlos to win this Roland Garros, and at least win all of the Slam titles at some point in his career. For now, I tend to find Sinner and his game bland. However, LOL, this is obviously extremely subjective- and I reserve the right to change my mind on Sinner. He certainly appears to be a very likable person off the court. And, BTW, I of course would not at all be shocked if Sinner wins this Roland Garros.

by jazzyg I love the idea of an Alcaraz-Sinnet poll. I am firmly in the Alcaraz camp, believing he will win 20-plus slams, but there is this lingering doubt that this will be another Federer-Nadal situation. Up until their second meeting at Roland Garros I was convinced Federer was the vastly superior player and would figure out Nadal on clay. I gave that up after their 2006 meeting, and eventually I doubted whether Federer was the better player period.

Sinner has been better than Alcaraz on all surfaces in their head-to-head meetings to this point. I think Alcaraz will turn it around because I think he has a better all-around game, but history does not back me up there.

Their head-to-head is 4-4 so I'm not sure what you mean by Sinner has been better on all surfaces.

Potito Starace is my favorite Italian tennis player name, so far.

by jazzyg Sinner had match points in their US Open match and should have won it. He had major physical issues in their rematch on hard courts last year after beating him two weeks earlier.

He also beat him on grass and clay consecutively. Their head-to-head is 4-4 bur easily could be 6-2. And even at 4-4, those meetings took place when Alcaraz was the more accomplished player. You would expect him to have a sizable lead based on their respective accomplishments.

by mick1303 I'm so surprised that bookies have Alcaraz as such a strong favorite: 1.54 to 2.37. To me it shall be quite closer. Alcaraz shall deservedly be a favorite. Just by not as much.

by ponchi101 I don't see how anybody can claim there is a favorite for that match. They are so even.

ponchi101 wrote: Thu Jun 06, 2024 11:04 am I don't see how anybody can claim there is a favorite for that match. They are so even.
Don't you think the surface gives Carlos an advantage? He has seven titles on clay. Jannik has one.

by Suliso I think Alcaraz is a slight favorite (60-40). At USO I'd reverse those percentages.

by ponchi101 I say this time I was right. It was very close.
