The heat is extreme enough to make Tommy Etcheverry throw up on court 12.
Almost 4 hours of match. Warranted.

Anybody say the Iva Jovic match? She is only 16 and pushed Alexandrova to 7-5 in the third.
Any scouting on her?

I just watched the last few games, and I watched a little of her first match. OF course, I hope someone will report in who watched more of Jovic.

WITH my obviously limited perspetive....As one would expect of a 16 year old- she will have to develop at least a good serve. Otherwise- excellent ground strokes, and she goes for her shots- good and bad. NOT just a retriever. NO idea of her over-all prospects.

It took Alexandrova 7 match points to "win". Including at least one double fault on a match point, and some ridiculous errors. It would have been awfully hard at the end of that match to determine who was the veteran on the court.

Musetti and Kecmanovic played a terrific match.

Kecmanovic looked to be the fresher of the two in the fifth and had two match points at 4-5. But he suddenly hit the wall after Musetti made 3 incredible gets in a row on game point at 5-5 on would-be putaways before Kecmanovic missed a tough volley for deuce. He could not get a ball in the court on the next six points and Musetti earned a gritty win.

I'm surprised with how easily Stearns defeated Kasatkina.

Fritz is in a second set TB with Matteo and is up 5-0 after winning the first set 6-3.

Fritz and Matteo both off the court, because HUGO does not want them playing in sweaty clothes.
It is icky.

The two players whose early-tournament form I believe to be overrated are Fritz and Osaka.

I watched most of Fritz's match against Berrettini, and although Fritz was solid, Berrettini played very poorly and moved worse than he normally does. I'm a Berrettini guy normally and think he is better than he is given credit for, but he apparently cut short his practices the week before the Open, and it showed tonight. He had nothing. Nothing. He made it to a second-set tiebreak on first serve and willpower but never was in any of Fritz's service games, dumped the first six points of the tiebreak and did not compete much in the third set. Fritz will get far too much credit for that scoreline than he deserves.

I did not watch the Osaka-Ostapenko match, but I've seen plenty enough of Ostapenko recently to know that with the exception of Wimbledon, she's been god-awful since May. Pretty much anyone with game would have beaten her is straights. We will find out a lot more about Osaka, who has had a hard time stringing matches together since coming back, when she faces Muchova tomorrow. I can't confidently predict a Muchova win because I have no idea where her head or health are at the moment, but Osaka could lose it.

If Fritz plays Ruud in the fourth round, everyone will pick Fritz even though Ruud has been to a U.S. Open final and Fritz has not been past the quarters of any slam. I see Ruud as a slight favorite in that matchup.

Kasatkina hit AT LEAST 3 double faults in that second tiebreaker. I say this because I was watching the match on and off on my computer while we were watching another TV program. So, LOL, I missed some of how Kastakina otherwise lost one or two points in that tiebreaker. It was horrible. Her game confidence has just been shot lately. Sad.

i was very nervous picking Alexandrova in SP - I had heard of Jovic and she is going to be a champion soem day - likes to take the ball early, looks up to Bencic for that reason.. will go far.

Caught the Ruud/Monfils match yesterday on the Grandstand (luckily grabbed some seats in the shade). Not surprisingly, a very entertaining match. I think you're right about Ruud - he's playing great. He lost the third when Monfils slipped into magician-mode for a bit, but Ruud weathered a very pro-Monfils crowd (including, I confess, me), a lengthy delay when Monfils got into an argument with the umpire over a time violation, and then having to come back to the court at 11 PM after a two hour lighting-delay to finish the job. Cool, calm, and unflappable. Watch out for him.

From what I saw on TV, he is hitting his FH a bit harder. The BH slice is also improving; it seems to have more underspin.
