by ti-amie Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula out: Queen's Club return hit with major withdrawals

Organisers of the Queen’s Club Championships have been dealt a significant setback just days before the tournament’s long-awaited women’s return, with top stars Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula withdrawing from the WTA 500 event.

The grass-court tournament, which officially begins this Saturday and runs until June 22, is hosting a women’s draw for the first time in over half a century. Expectations were high, but fans will now be left disappointed by the late exits of two of the sport’s biggest names.

A statement from the tournament confirmed: “Jessica Pegula and Naomi Osaka withdraw from HSBC Championships. We hope to see both Naomi and Jessica back on court soon and at The Queen's Club in 2026.”

Both players arrive at Queen’s off the back of underwhelming French Open campaigns. Osaka, who was granted a wildcard for Queen’s, fell in the opening round at Roland Garros to Paula Badosa in a tight three-set battle. Pegula, the current world No. 3 and one of the event’s top seeds, suffered a shock fourth-round defeat to France’s Lois Boisson - ranked 361st in the world - who has since progressed to the semi-finals.

by ashkor87 looking forward to seeing how Muchova does.. she has a nice easy first round.

by ashkor87 Czech women seem to have a lock on Wimbledon - can Muchova take over?

It would make me so happy.
She has the game. Let's see if her body holds up.

I don't think I'd put my money on Muchova on grass. If she broke through and took a slam, I think it would be on hard courts.

by ponchi101 I think her game translates well to all surfaces.
But she would be a dark horse. She has played a beautiful game in the past. But the years have been piling on.

She baffles me. She's got all the goods to be a top ten player and yet somehow she manages to go on walkabout when it matters.

by Owendonovan All good match ups here.

by ashkor87 saw Kessler play Zheng on highlights video.. Kessler has the right idea - go to the net behind a low ball, often a slice - opponent will tend to hit it uppishly, and Kessler is a very good volleyer. She didnt win but she showed she knows how to.

by ashkor87 Shnaider versus Keys will be very interesting.. Keys is a bit slow on her feet, so will be vulnerable.. wouldnt be surprised if Shnaider wins this one. Though, I must say, Keys has become much quicker and more agile over the past 12 months.. as she gets older (isnt that odd?)

by ashkor87 Keys pulled out the win...waiting to see clips..how she moved...

by ponchi101 Maria upsets Rybakina. Elena seems to be going nowhere nowadays, and this may be permanent.

by ashkor87 saw the extended highlights - Rybakina played quite well, actually - Maria employed the slice and volley very effectively, always works on grass.. Maria will be a force at W if she plays like this.
(I have quickly traded her in to my Fantasy Team)

by ashkor87 Now Maria beat Keys..she has the perfect grass-court game.

by ponchi101 Ok, I know she is playing well, but "perfect" grass game is a bit too much. :)
She played two players that, although fast, are not extremely nimble. Elena is a "slow" mover for that echelon of the WTA, and Maddie is also very fast but her footwork is not quick and smooth.
Anybody that made the SF's at W cannot be said not to know a bit or two about grass court tennis. But this may be a bit flukey.
Hope she wins the tournament, though. Would be a good story.

Maria will lose in the first round of Wimbledon and take out a bunch of the pool.

by Suliso As we expected an easy win for Maria. This is her 4th career title and 2nd on grass.

by jazzyg Maria had lost nine matches in a row entering this tournament. She had not beaten a top 20 player since her run to the Wimbledon semis in 2022. She lost to the No. 229-ranked player in the first round of a 125 grass tournament last week.

This was one of the most remarkable runs in history. After losing six games total in two qualifying matches, she ran through Fernandez, Muchova, Rybakina, Keys and Anisimova with the loss of just one set (to Muchova, who was up a set and 2-0 and then up 5-4, 0-30 in the second round). She's proven her grass bonafides before, but this truly came out of nowhere.
